Wildlife Management

What is Wildlife Management?

Wildlife management defines a process of keeping wild species at desirable levels within a give region, territory or zone. It aims to assess the population of certain mammal species, generally deer, foxes, badgers rabbits and squirrels within a given area, then maintain a balance of numbers which fits that area.

Getting this balance right, ensures that both man and wildlife can live in harmony and balance. Factors influencing this are many and varied, but the common ones are availability of habitat, food, size of territory, damage caused to vegetation or woodland and encroachment into human habitation.

For example, having too many deer in a woodland area affect the natural flora and fauna of that woodland area and may remove natural habitat for other birds and animals, and too many rabbits will overwhelm and devastate the undergrowth. Keeping the numbers in check will balance the woodland and create a health population of the remaining wildlife. Disease and tick infestation only occurs where populations are too dense.

Unlike pest control, Wildlife Management is about balance and tolerance, allowing nature to provide the habitats that allow a population to thrive and not eradication. You will notice that rats and mice do not feature in this type of activity as they should be controlled and eradicated using pest control methods.

Wildlife management is about balance and harmony. It takes time and effort from not only the wildlife manager, but the farmers, woodland workers, landowners and tenants all working towards a common goal to create a sustainable environment with a good balance of nature.

What does Wildlife Management involve?

Rapid Pest Control’s Wildlife Management services provide the framework on which estates can be managed from a wildlife viewpoint.

Let’s take an example of a golf course. Golf courses are large areas of countryside with a purpose to provide golf to its clients. There are many facets to this business and each golf course provides buildings for catering, changing rooms and pro shops etc, as well as employing grounds men, specialist contractors for drainage, tree planting, fencing etc.

Rapid Pest Control will firstly understand the viewpoint from each party involved in the golf course, understand the concerns, and objectives they all wish to achieve. The next task will be a detailed survey of current wildlife activity, including numbers and types and their current impact on the estate. Afterall, Golfers want to see wildlife, but rabbits digging up greens and fairways are not acceptable.

Once we have completed all the details, a plan can be produced outlining cull plans, prevention and exclusion requirements (i.e. tree guards, fencing etc) and then implement in agreement with the management.

Wildlife Management plans remove the problem of pests and wildlife from the Estate as you are assured that there is a structured plan in place to deal with all situations. This also removes un-budgeted costs and allows the business to concentrate on its business whilst we deal with the wildlife.
