Rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus)

Description:

The rabbit is approximately 40cm in length and grey in colour with a distinctive white “bob tail” and long ears. Rabbits were introduced into the United Kingdom back in Roman times and has spread across the whole of the country in staggering numbers over the years. In years gone by, the rabbit was considered to be an excellent food source (and still is), however with fewer being controlled in this way now, natural predators do not keep the numbers to an acceptable level. Rabbits can devastate crops and gardens.

Why Control:

Rabbit breed rapidly, having up to 5 litters of 6 – 8 babies per time. Each female reaches sexual maturity in just 2 – 3 months, so population explosions are quite typical if not controlled. Rabbits can strip young plants and crops and undermine roads, banks and gardens with their constant burrowing.

Signs of infestation:

Scrapes and shallow digging in borders or grass areas, faeces piled in patches, dead grass are a common first indication, followed by runs appearing, holes and burrows in banks and hedges, then plant life being eaten at low level. Flecks of grey fur can often be found as the males fight for territory.

Usual Treatment:

As a rule, rabbit infestations will require a detailed assessment before a course of action can be taken – this may involved several different methods being combined in an overall strategy.

Common methods employed by Rapid Pest Control Services are Rabbit Shooting (both by day and night), ferreting, trapping using spring, cage and drop traps, snaring (by approved snares) and gassing with Aluminum Phosphide (by our authorised operatives only).

Once the problem is under control, Rapid Pest Control Services offer prevention measures like burrow collapsing (after assuring all wildlife is out of the burrows), fencing and ongoing inspection and treatments.
