Moles (Talpa Europaea)

Description:

Moles are approximately 15 – 20cm in length and have a distinctive pair of large front legs. They are covered in dark, almost black, smooth fur and live almost exclusively underground. They have poor eyesight but have acute hearing and smell as well as picking up vibration, which is how it usually finds its prey. Moles are very territorial and solitary animals, only coming together to mate. Moles create a network of tunnels which it uses both as a means of transport and as a trap for worms and other insects to fall into. Very little scientific information is know about this very secretive creature.

Why Control:

Moles can produce a huge amount of “mole hills”, the distinctive heaps of fresh earth appearing above ground. This can be a major problem both in agriculture and in domestic situations. The earth can do significant damage to machines tending the field and destroy lawns and areas of access like parks and gardens. They have one litter per year of up to 8 babies and if left without control will soon spread, virtually destroying lawns or pastures.

Signs of infestation:

Distinctive mole hills of fresh earth will appear over night in most cases. These vary in size from a few inches to a few feet in diameter. This spoil is produced as a result of tunneling activity by one or several moles. It is common that moles will congregate in areas rich in worm or underground insect life and fight to defend their own tunnels vigorously. You may also see shallow runs or ridges in the ground indicating surface activity.

Usual Treatment:

There are two methods of mole control treatment, trapping or gassing commonly available. In some cases a license may be granted for the use of Strychnine laced worms, but this is becoming more unusual. Gassing uses Aluminum Phosphide tablets which can only be administered by professional qualified users like Rapid Pest Control Services operatives.

Gassing is very effective during wet months and in deeper tunnels, where as trapping uses humane scissor or barrel type traps in both shallow and deep tunnels.
