Fox Control

Fox numbers are on the increase across the UK. Foxes are known to be a carrier of some diseases such as mange, fleas and even rabies on the continent. One of the major problems is that foxes are indiscriminate killers of poultry and small animals and are relentless and merciless predators.

As more and more people are now keeping a few chickens, foxes are encroaching into sub-urban areas more and more. Also, with food readily available in towns and cities, urban foxes are commonly seen in towns and breeding in these environments.

Foxes are a major problem in rural and farming areas, particularly in areas of free range chicken production and sheep farming.

Foxes – General description and identification

The Red Fox is a small dog like animal reddish brown, with a long bushy tail. The fox has adapted easily to the habits of man and is often seen early morning or late at night raiding bins and scavenging off our waste. Foxes breed once a year and can produce up to 10 whelps. Urban foxes generally are in much poorer condition than country foxes, probably due to a diet of junk food.

Foxes are born survivors and being omnivorous will eat absolutely anything from insects to carrion. The fox is particularly fond of small birds, eggs and of course chickens and the occasional family pet rabbit and Guinea pig if it can. Foxes also have also been known to take kittens and small cats.

Signs of fox problems

You will often see bin bags being ripped open and contents scattered, death of livestock, particularly dead chickens with just the head missing. There is also normally a heavy musty smell marking exits and entry areas and even scent marking of carcasses.

A detailed safety and risk assessment will be required to discuss the most appropriate course of action but methods such as snares, shooting and trapping can be used to catch or kill foxes.
