Feral pigeons

Description:

Often described as "rats with wings", the Feral Pigeon is actually a descendant of the Rock Dove, breeding with Racing Pigeons that have lost their way to produce what you see today. They vary in colour from brownish grey to white. They have adapted to mans environment very well and now have become part of most towns wildlife.

Why Control:

Feral Pigeons are known to carry diseases such as Chiamdiosis, a virus similar to influenza, and Psittacosis, similar to pneumonia. There is also a fear of Bird Flu being spread by Feral pigeons.Feral pigeons also produce a large amount of droppings, which not only harbor diseases, but cause damage to buildings.

Usual Treatment:

Feral pigeons pose several different issues and so a detailed assessment needs to be carried out to understand the methods employed. This can involve deterrents like spikes and netting to stop them roosting, but this just moves the problem elsewhere. Rapid Pest Control Services will be happy to discuss how we can cost effectively carry out a suitable treatment.

Wood Pigeons (Columba palumbus)

Description:

The Wood Pigeon is grey in colour with a white strip on its neck and wings. In towns, they usually frequent parks and gardens and pose little problems, however in the countryside they cause immense damage to crops virtually at all stages of growth. They will flock in huge numbers and devastate young shoots and plants in hours.

Why Control:

Pigeons literally strip fields of their crops in very short times if left to do so. Once a feeding pattern is established, they return day after day and cause a huge amount of damage, costing thousands to farmers. They are particularly fond of Oil seed rape, spring barley, peas and beans.

Usual Treatment:

The only way of effective control is shooting. Bird scarer's and "scarecrows" have little effect once a frenzy begins. Rapid Pest Control Services will work with farmers, estate managers and gamekeepers to plan and execute an effective control plan against Wood pigeons.
